Homebuyers could have more negotiating power this spring, as inventory surges. At least three new reports show the supply of homes for sale is the best it’s been in about ten years. The drop comes after several months of slow sales, but the data shows that demand is strong so prices may not recede that much.

It may be too soon to call it a “buyers’ market.” But, Zillow, Redfin, and Re/Max all agree that the market is tipping toward buyers.

As more and more home builders showcase energy efficient construction, Harvard is tackling a much tougher problem. The University’s “Center for Green Buildings and Cities” is looking for ways to retrofit older homes for zero energy consumption at a new living lab along the edge of its campus. The lab is a pre-1940’s home in Cambridge, that doubles as the Center’s headquarters, and is now so energy efficient, it doesn’t need an HVAC system.

We’ve heard a lot about tiny homes lately. They’ve gotten tons of publicity as a more economical housing option for people who want to downsize and live with just a few possessions. Some cities are also embracing them as a way to house the homeless, including those who’ve lost homes to wildfires and other natural disasters. New reports confirm a growing interest in tiny homes among home buyers, but the jury is still out on whether this trend will mature into a mainstream phenomenon.

Amazon pulled the plug on its HQ2 plan for New York, and that’s left many people stunned, especially those in the real estate world. A group of local politicians and residents who opposed the project drove Amazon away, but there are many people, including a majority of New Yorkers, who now think the city lost a golden opportunity for jobs and economic growth.

What you do for a living could make it easier or harder to buy a home, depending on where you live. New research shows that a person’s ability to get ahead can be wildly different from city to city depending on their occupation. That’s because of differences in pay for their chosen vocations, the cost of renting as they save for a down payment, and the cost of buying a home. Real estate data company “Property Shark” looked into this relationship and came up with a list of cities that are best for each job category.

The plot thickens in the death of a Canadian crypto exchange CEO and the disappearance of almost 200 million dollars in deposits. His widow says he was the only one with access to a cold storage vault where much of those funds were allegedly stored, but there are growing concerns that the currency is simply “missing.” It’s a tough lesson for more than 100,000 customers who are now planning legal action to try to recoup their losses.

Atlanta may cover some of its highways with parks as a way to lure more young professionals into the city’s urban core. It’s not a new concept to cover highways with parks, but the idea appears to be getting more attention as cities compete for tech talent. According to the Wall Street Journal, these so-called “deck parks” help pretty up congested business districts which make them more attractive to millennial workers.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has fired the first shot in a battle with cities over affordable housing. During his first week as governor, he threatened to withhold transportation funding if cities don’t comply with the “fair share” housing law. A few weeks later, he raised the ante with a first-of-its kind lawsuit against Huntington Beach. The battle pits the Governor against a pervasive NIMBYism that prevents the building of affordable housing in many of California’s high-priced neighborhoods.

It’s a relatively new concept for senior living that’s making it easier to “age-in-place.” Virtual villages have been spreading across the country to help people maintain an independent lifestyle. It’s become a crucial piece in the retirement puzzle for people who want to remain in their homes for as long as possible. And there are plenty of them.

A California company that’s turning Airstream trailers into a new kind of hotel has grabbed the attention of real estate investors. AutoCamp announced a new strategic capital partnership and $115 million in equity commitments to expand its “glamping” operations across the nation.
