Los Angeles County Supervisors have said “yes” to the building of a massive new mixed-use community about 60 miles north of the metro region, despite increased concerns about wildfires in areas like this. Supervisors say they approved the development because housing is badly needed in Southern California and the developers are taking steps to reduce the risk of fire.

Minneapolis is shaking up the housing market with a new zoning law, that could set a precedent for cities across the country. The city council voted to eliminate single-family zoning and to allow duplexes and triplexes in all parts of the city. It’s a bold decision to confront the affordable-housing by creating more housing in the mid-range of affordability, or what some call the “missing middle.” It’s also meant to help diversity neighborhoods, and eliminate housing sprawl which contributes to climate change.

iBuyers are becoming an important source of inventory for rental giants looking for single-family homes. Foreclosures have essentially dried up since the housing recovery, and larger landlords like Invitation Homes and American Homes 4 Rent are turning to iBuyers to fill the gap.

The battle over water rights is simmering in Southern California with a powerful East Coast investor. According to the Wall Street Journal (1), the Harvard University endowment has been buying large tracts of farmland, and turning them into vineyards. It’s an investment strategy that will provide short term returns from the grape harvest, and a long-term hedge, according to the Journal, against climate change -- because farmland comes with water rights.

Appraisers are worried about a proposal to loosen appraisal requirements for some home sales. It will cut into their business if that happens, but they say it’s not about money. They are more concerned about risks to the lending environment, if homes are not accurately assessed. Without an appraisal, home buyers may pay too much for a home, or lenders may come up short if there’s a default.

The hackers had access to Marriott’s Starwood Reservation system and the personal information for half a billion customers. It’s a huge wake up call for all consumers to protect their identities so that hackers who get this kind of information, can’t use it.

Boston has agreed to put parts of its new short-term rental rules on hold in response to an Airbnb lawsuit. Airbnb is suing the city over the enforcement provisions, and is asking for an injunction against all of the rules pending the outcome of the court battle. The rules are supposed to take effect on January 1st.
