The richest man in the world has launched a new foundation to help the homeless. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos announced on Twitter that he and his wife, MacKenzie, are funding the new Bezos Day One Fund with a $2-billion-dollar donation. The money will be used for two initiatives -- one to help homeless charities and the second to create a high-quality network of pre-schools in low-income neighborhoods.

Self-employed home buyers may soon find it’s much easier to get a home loan. A bipartisan pair of Senators introduced legislation that will give lenders more options for verifying a person’s income. If it gets through Congress and is approved by the President, it could conceivably help as many as 42 million Americans who don’t earn a standard weekly paycheck.

Uber is throwing back the curtain on its plan to disrupt the real estate industry, although it’s not clear yet how completely disruptive it will be. California lawmakers approved a bill that helps victims of last year’s devastating wildfires, and helps PG&E avoid financial disaster. Critics are calling it a PG&E bailout because of the October 8th wind-driven wildfires in Northern California. But, without the bill, PG&E could fall into bankruptcy and leave uninsured fire victims without any recourse for compensation. This legislation makes all of our utilities along with their ratepayers ultimately responsible for the cost of wildfires, but passes more of the cost onto the utilities if state officials determine they are to blame for the fires.

The South African president claims it is not a land grab and denies that it’s an assault on the private ownership of property.
